Alex Headland (long exposure)

Hi all!

We went north to the Sunshine Coast over the weekend and stayed a couple of nights at Alexandra Headland. I got up early Saturday morning and tried some long exposure imaging using my new ND400 filter on the rocks at the southern end of the beach. It was just me and the surfers - God knows what they thinking watching me clamber over the slippery rocks with a camera and tripod!

Thanks everyone for the kind thoughts and gratefully accepted compliments!

I've wanted to try my hand at long exposure photography (that wasn't astro based) for a long time and was very excited to get the ND400 filter. I took about 10 images last Saturday morning but I felt there was only one decent one in the lot - the one I have in this thread. The water level in the others was either too low or too high but practice makes perfect so I'll be using the filter whenever the occasion and opportunity arises!

If you're open to accepting some constructive criticism, my advice would be to really hone the composition. At the moment, the rock feature cut off at the left seems a little bit jarring, for what is otherwise a serene and peaceful image. Liken it to photographing a human subject and cropping the composition at the wrists or ankles. Other than that, I love this -- beautiful light.

I always welcome constructive criticism - it's the only way I'll learn and improve!

I think my main problem with all the long exposure images I took last Saturday morning was that I didn't take a minute to think my composition through at the time I took the images. This image had sky at the top and a rather large amount of water to the bottom of the image. I kept cropping in a more standard way (6x4 etc) and was never happy with what I was seeing.

In the end I though "I took pictures of the rocks so just keep the rocks!" I then concentrated on getting the big rock in the foreground into a bottom third position and didn't worry too much about the sides. However I do see what you mean but I'm not sure where would be a good place to crop the left hand side.

What do you think would be a good place or is it something that should have been done when taking the picture, i.e. including all of the large rock to the left?

Thanks once again for your 2 cents worth and am happy to get any more of your "copper frilled neck lizard" advice that you might have!

Spectacular capturing with them rocks Mario, , sweet colours and mix in the scene
Also thought there could be more in this image and left me pondering why no horizon ? This would be a totally awesome foreground to a Sunrise
