The Gegenschein

Hi folks,

Here is one of quite rare celestial "objects" which doesn't appear on images often - the Gegenschein. Gegenschein is a faint brightening of the night sky in the region of the antisolar point. Physically, the gegenschein is sunlight backscattered by interplanetary dust. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gegenschein). Usually its seen under very good and dark skies only. Here is the image from the north of Chile, where we witnessed the Gegenschein in early November this year.

You can see a high-res version here:

That is such a cool shot. So deep. Yet can't seen any hint of the eridanus loop. That's how faint this stuff is.

That is a superb image. I estimate the faint part of the Gegenschein is 50 degrees long.
(M45 to M42 is 39 degrees)

Thanks, guys ! I used my standard setup - Canon 6D + Nikkor 14-24. The Gegenschein requires truly dark skies, because it's quite faint and the contrast is low. Some luck is needed, but it's not impossible for sure.
