teflon pads

hello people

just a quick question on the teflon pads on the dob base (4 of them in my case )

would it be an good idea to change these to super sliders at a later date ?

thanks

thanks for your reply people

at the moment it seems to move freely

and ive got bearings instead of teflon pads in the base and ill keep an eye out for the dirt in these

plus i thought id mention that my dob base is totally made from chipboard

yup. supersliders work better
i have them in my 8"

but most importantly, is your azimuth movement sticky? if not then dont bother changing anything.

Yep, I have change to super sliders in two circles with the milkjug washer trick around the centre bolt. Really smooth action

Remember it still doesn't replace the fact that you have to periodically pull the base apart to clean it. After all its right down there in the dirt and needs looking after.

Cheers

If its any help,my old dob has 3 small teflon pads(35x20x4mm) on the bottom base, the top has a LP record(KTEL various hits)fitted to it for the pads to ride on.The complete dob base is made from 6ply.It's monstrous and heavy, but in the 10yrs I've had it (bought second hand) it's still moving easily and freely.I've only pulled it apart once to remove a small stone lodged in there when we were paving.Just another option maybe.

Yes, that bumpiness is annoying the crap out me at high magnifications. I'm wondering whether it is the paint on the plates wearing unevenly (it is worn in regular strips).
Actually, instead of wondering, I'll just go attack those plates. Let's hope they're made of corrosion resistant steel.
