Spiral Galaxy near the LMC

After cruising the south pacific for Christmas I came home to clear sunny skies and managed to put this together over three nights (only one was totally clear though )

This time of year sees many scopes and cameras trained on the LMC...well very nearby is this lovely galaxy NGC 1672 in Dorado which lies only about 5 deg from the edge of the LMC. Only modest in size at 6.75' X 5.75' it has a broad bright bar with a bright Seyfert typeII core with plenty of star burst activity going on around it. As is customary ...under a high contrast stretch, some very faint outer arms are revealed too

I installed some larger 36mm filters in the filterwheel to remove the small amount of vignetting I was getting with the smaller 1.25" filters and it did the trick ...so this is once again no darks and no flats and no gradient removal either, just to see what is possible

The seeing, while not terrible and some steady periods occured, was pretty average most of the time

Close up

The Full Frame

Faint outer arms

Happy New Year!

Mike

Very interesting looking galaxy Mike. The barb is split with lots of detail. I like the full frame version showing surrounding objects.

Cheers

Very nice Mike. Great minds do think alike. It is one of the better targets around at the moment.

You got some nice colour in the core there as well.
The stars look great. Good to hear the new filters worked well.

Greg.

Great shot Mike,
I checked on Google & I can't find a wide field view of this galaxy for comparison -
only the famous Hubble close up.
Is yours the first of such a high standard?

cheers

Yes its weird isn't it? Hardly any record of anyone imaging this and Mike and myself both image it at the same time.

But then we are on a galaxy imaging mission!

Greg.

Nicely done as usual Mike with great composition. There's a nice Hubble shot of this one.

Cheers

Lovely galaxy, Mike! You've shown the core nicely - looks like that other Seyfert we both imaged recently, NGC 1097. Lots of smaller galaxies in the wide field and a very favourable comparison with the Schmidt plate.

Cheers,
Rick.

Sorry Greg,
I missed yours.
Very nice indeed.
I notice your background is much darker than Mike's.
Maybe you'd get the extended arms if it was lightened?
Both images are excellent.

cheers

Nice image Mike, might have to have a go at this myself, just to remind me why light pollution sucks.

Cheers

Cheers Steve, yes there is something about a galaxy surrounded by lots of other smaller more distant ones huh?

Cheers Greg, yes uncanny that we imaged it at essentially the same time, it is great not really needing darks and flats, really makes processing very easy.

There are a couple but you are right not many, makes teh fact that both Greg and I spied it at the same time quite coincidental

Thanks Rick, still no mega data I know but seriously I just don't have the patience any more seems I have become more contented with a semi deep image than a super deep one At least the size and speed of the AG12 does allow for this "lazyness" to still produce something decent, oh well...

Sublime work once again Mike.

The colours and depth are incredible and with no darks and no flats, you lucky, lucky B*******!

It really is amazing what you can crank out of your setup. It is always a pleasure to cruise around your full frames like an interstellar explorer in a scout ship pausing between hyperspace jumps.

Cheers

Chris

very interesting image, mainly the arm that seem to be bound with two sides of bar.

Another great image Mike. The AG12 produces a very pleasing image IMO. I especially like the way you have processed it - detail, colour and not OTT. keep them coming!

Glad you enjoy them Peter, I am quite happy with how this scope and camera system is performing, lots of fun

Ah thanks Rob, it is easy with this gear, it's great, I could take plenty of the credit myself I guess, If I wanted, but seriously it is really not that hard, now that I don't really need darks and flats preprocessing has become a sinch
