Last image - Eta Carina Nebula

Last image out of the Refractor for a little while. Eta Carina Nebula. If you put aside the slightly out of focus stars (focus shift during the course of the exposures) and slight seagulling at the edges of the frame, I think it turned out pretty okay for a light polluted image. Shooting into the Light dome from Adelaide. 14 x 300sec exp ISO800. Astronomik CLS filter, Canon 1100D, 80mm f5.6 Refractor. Reasonably happy with it.

I think I will test this object when I get the new scope on Monday.

The nebula colours are nice, but the stars are all blue.

I can understand the difficulties in getting the colours of everything right using the CLS. It can really throw things off.

Thanks Kevin, I am still trying to figure out how to fix the stars. Not exactly sure what to do yet, might have to move to a dark site Thanks for your comments.

I'm having a similar issue with the CLS and my full spectrum camera. While I can get the background and stars more or less neutral, the nebula colours are so strong in Ha that there is little O3 passing to give contrast so nebula become just red. Even though the CLS does pass O3, the balance between O3 and Ha seems off.

I'm experimenting with stacking colour filters to try and get a more balanced look to the pics, but most filters are too strong and swing the colour wildly one way or the other.

Another way might be to stack two sets of frames, one with a Ha bias and one with an O3 bias. Add a blue then I'd have RGB. But there's goes the plan of OSC.

I am wondering if getting the Hutech IDAS LP filter would be a better option, I had good success using one a while back, good colours.

The Baader semi-apo filter gives good colours also, but with less contrast to fight the LP.

I know the CLS makes a mess of M42. All the beautiful subtle blues, aqua and greys all turn red. Hard to have cake and eat it too...

But then it's all subjective. There's no right or wrong colour. It's just what the individual finds attractive. I think the hubble palette looks like puke a lot of the time and it's technically wrong when Ha is mapped to green lol. So just go with what you like I reckon and don't take too much notice of me.
