DSS output file reading problem

I am producing some quite nice results in DSS, but Windows won't open
the images, and nor will Photoshop. I have tried outputting in TIFF and
FITS to no avail. Am I missing something. This damn image processing is
doing my head in.

Raymo,

I save in TIFF format from DSS and they load fine in both the apps you listed. Make sure you are not saving 32 bit it must be 16 in the save picture to file tab. Also make sure you have selected apply adjustments to saved image or you will lose all of your hard work...

Which version of PS and windows? Some of the really old versions wouldn't handle 16 bit.

Hi again Kevin, My PS is PS 7.0 which is very old[at least 10yrs], and I
certainly can't afford to update to a newer version. I'll have to find a
freeware image processor. I am using Windows 7 home premium. None
of the software that came with my 1100D seems interested in opening these files. I don't have any problems using JPEGs in registax or PS.
I have all sorts of problems using RAW[Cr2] files. Trying to learn and
remember how and where to convert from one format to another is doing
my head in, and I'm on the verge of giving up on stacking images and sticking with single exposures.

Mmm PS 7 is a bit old. Just reading on the net some have no problem but others do.

Have you tried downloading Irfanview yet? It handles 16 bit tiff no problem and it's free.

raymo, in DSS try 'copy current picture to clipboard' then go into PS, create new, select 16bit and canvas size, and then paste. that generally works for me.

Thanks everyone for your input, will try all the suggestions. As I said earlier, I have tried 16 and 32 bit rational and integer, and I can't find any program that will open them. Incidentally, the final images in DSS
are huge, for example 189mb, is this normal, or am I doing something wrong somewhere along the line; the example was only the result of stacking 5 2mb images. It's annoying, as I have a lovely image that
I can't access. All programs tried say "this file format not supported
or the file is corrupted or damaged"

Photoshop will open the 32bit tiff's from DSS.
You need to drag and drop the file onto the Photoshop icon. It will then open it. Then you will need to convert the file to 16bit to be able to access all the tools.

And if all that doesn't work, try this. Once it's finished it's thing, choose save picture to file in the processing box. Then choose "save as type 16 bit tiff". Choose either apply adjustments or embed adjustments without applying them. That should work.

Thanks everyone for all the advice. Should I manage to get it working, I have one more question. How do I resize the enormous TIFF file down to the 200kb that IIS accepts. The file is so huge that the program I use
for resizing won't accept it. [189mb] ?

In Photoshop....Resize the processed image to 20%, then go to File, Save for Web and Devices. Then use the slider to adjust it down to 200kb.
If the region of interest is fairly small, crop the image, then resize to suit the screen.
does that make sense?? LOL

Well, that got me nowhere. I downsized to 20% o.k. went to save for web and devices, and there was no slider or any other way of further
adjusting size. In any case the automatically optimised size for the web
was some 550kb, still much too big for IIS, and also the image was so small that when enlarged enough to see it properly, it was just a load of pixels. Here we go again. My wife is getting very crabby with the many
hours I'm spending trying to sort this out.

When you resized did you change the setting from pixels to percentage?
Another way to make the image smaller in size is to change it to 8 bit, save as a JPEG and a window will come up automatically with an adjustment slider.
I'm on the iPad ATM otherwise I'd take some screen grabs to walk you through it.

Yes I did change the setting to percentage. I don't understand why I
am having so much trouble resizing, as hundreds of people on IIS seem
to do it o.k. I'm using PS7 which is very old, which might explain why there was no slider. I'll see if I can nut out how to change to 8 bit etc.
If not, I'll stick to single exposure images; after all its not worth all the effort to produce the best images that I can if I can't share them with
anybody. You can tell how comp literate my wife and I are. She was given
a Galaxy Tab 3 for her birthday some time ago, and all we have worked how to do on it is play card games and send email. What a waste of
money when she can do that on her phone.

P.S. I have 50 yrs of film AP behind me; you have no idea how
frustrating it is to be struggling so much to come to grips with the
digital age. I found my wife crying the other day, and when I asked
what was wrong she said that she felt like a dunce because she
didn't know where to start with that bloody Tab 3.

Ray, you're not alone. I don't own an iPad, iPhone or iAnything lol. If someone gave me one I wouldn't know what to do with it!

Like you I have 34 years of film photography in the background but this digital stuff takes some getting used to. Yet my cousin's 2 year old uses an iPad like a pro!
