so is this a RF3 controller ie can it be used as a stand alone controller or must it be used with a computer

Stand Alone? It has in/out buttons on the controller to drive the motor if that's what you mean. It's a robofocus controller, afaik they are all the same, you connect it to a pc to autofocus using focusmax etc.
