Nippon Goto Kogaku 100mm Refractor Telescope

FOR SALE - Nippon Goto Kogaku 100mm Refractor Telescope

Still too many telescopes, so this classic simply has to make way to assist to support funding my new 200mm Officina Stellare RH200 astrograph

Produced in Japan during the 1960's, the Nippon Goto Kogaku telescope was the forerunner of Nikon. This achromatic design refractor telescope has a premium quality 100mm crown and flint objective lens with multi-layer coatings for excellent colour correction and image clarity. It utilizes a brass 1.25" rack and pinion focuser and has a focal length of 1500mm.

This telescope is really rare - it is the only Goto Kogaku telescope I have encountered in fifty years of astronomy. Similar to the famous Unitron's, but with significantly higher optical performance and capability - and I make this comment as a massive Unitron fan and owner of Australia's largest collection of Unitron's - so if you have been considering a 100mm Unitron - this unit is what you have been looking for - as it will outperform it.

Supply includes:
* Solid brass 1.25" focuser and assembly
* Japanese premium quality (Nippon Nikon) crown and flint objective lens
* Premium multi-layer coatings for outstanding colour correction and contrast
* f/15 focal ratio with a 14.3 limiting magnitude and 0.7 resolution
* Ultra rare collector's item telescope in good condition
* Includes original GoTo Kogaku finderscope, finderscope bracket, mounting rings and dovetail

Price $ 1,500 plus shipment via courier available nationally (at cost)

OPTIONS:

A. Eyepieces

If you are interested in adding some eyepieces to add to this system I am able to offer the following premium set:

1. Celestron Kellner K40 40mm 1.25 inch Circle T Japan
2. Celestron Kellner K25 25mm 1.25 inch Circle T Japan
3. Unitron Erfle ER20 20mm 1.25 inch Japan
4. Or 9mm Orthoscopic Circle T Japan
5. Or 6mm Orthoscopic Circle T Japan

If you want the telescope plus the full set of eyepieces I will do the 4 eyepieces for $ 180, which is way way below what they are worth. I am not prepared to sell these eyepieces separately at that price, so don't bother asking.

I am culling my eyepiece set and these are overages, and are all in very capable in performance and operation. All are original premium Japanese and are all 1.25 inch.

B. Diagonal

If you additionally want a diagonal I can assist with an original Tasuga 90 degree prism diagonal (the people that make Takahashi's diagonals) 1.25 inch prism diagonal which these were originally supplied with at say $ 100. Those that know this diagonal will know it is worth more than double this price 2nd hand, again don't ask to buy this part separately, as again I am not splitting and not selling my original Tasuga units at this time, they are far too valuable to do that.

Alternately you are welcome to a brand new (in original packaging, with full warranty) William Optics Dielectric 1.25 inch Carbon Plates diagonal at the same rate of $ 100 - which is below anyone's retail rate. Again not available separately at this price, so don't ask.

Thanks for looking.

Are any original eyepieces available ? I'm guessing they were Ramsden or Huygens for that vintage ?

Thank you for the enquiry.

This system was not supplied with the common 0.965 inch units that many Unitron's were. This unit is a 1.25 inch, and always has been 1.25 inch. The eyepiece adaptor is an original Brass GoTo 1.25 inch.

This system was originally supplied with a set of Circle T 1.25 inch K's and Or's.

If you are interested in some eyepieces to add to this system I am able to offer the following premium set:

1. Celestron Kellner K40 40mm 1.25 inch Circle T Japan
2. Celestron Kellner K25 25mm 1.25 inch Circle T Japan
3. Unitron Erfle ER20 20mm 1.25 inch Japan

5. Or 6mm Orthoscopic Circle T Japan

Gee Cris, I'd love to see your collection of Unitron's, perhaps you could publish photos of them in the "Show us your equipment!" section in the IIS forum.

I have the supremely ultra rare Polarex 5"/F15 and 6"/F15 equatorial refractor models, do you have these as well?

I'm sure I have a "Goto" catalogue somewhere, it would be interesting to see the specs on the 100mm model you are selling.

Thank's again for the feedback.

Yes this is a very special telescope.

I was expecting contact from you, Steve, regarding this system, as I am very aware of your collection of Unitron's.

The optics in this unit are better than a Unitron f15 4 incher, as I have tested this unit next to my three Unitron 4 inch f15's, and it beats all of them.

Unitron's are exquisite units, sure - and rare as you know, but this unit is much much much rarer. As my ad states I have seen one GoTo Gogaku in my life, this unit !!! That's in 50 years of very active astronomy, and very active collecting. Plus having owned hundreds upon hundreds of telescopes over the decades this unit has been one of my prizes, sure. But it's simply going to sit there, it deserves for someone to actually use it.

If someone wants it via Ice In Space then great, if not - will sell it in Japan or Europe, and at a higher price, as this unit wouldn't last long on the international web "For Sale" pages.

When I view the sky I use telescopes such as my obsy's 250mm Officina Stellare Sitall glass and Carbon fibre Maksutov, or one of my triplet LZOS's, or one of my Carl Zeiss oil spaced triplets. You would expect this, I am a perfectionist, and this gear simply screams performance. So the GoTo Gogaku - it's simply not going to see starlight with me, so it should go to someone that actually wants either something to use, or wants something really really really rare, and exotic for their collection.

I have far too many telescopes, you simply can't use over 170 units

Simple as that.

Clear skies.

Dear Rob,

The mount is not included, this supply is the telescope tube assembly only, plus the extra items of the eyepieces and diagonal as options also noted separately in this thread if you are interested in them.

If you are after a mount as well I can supply you with a Saxon HEq5 via my business Astronomy Alive - www.astronomyalive.com.au - at a special price. If interested please contact me privately on 03 9576 5325.

I have been collecting telescopes for over thirty years, these days I have everything I could ever want or desire - including some of the rarest and most sought after telescopes that exist. I am culling the telescope fleet (and also my eyepiece collection), as I have far far far too many.

Most of the collection are exotics, rare and ultra rare. If interested in something different to this Goto unit I suggest you contact me, as I have so many telescope that I simply will never use that it's well overdue for me to let a few go.

Trust this assists.

Cris,

I vaguely remember there was some question about the actual finder-scope? Is the finder-scope in the picture the actual one that comes with the scope, or are those old photos?

Actually, Cris, I can't wait for at least some of those 5" and 6" Polarex/Unitron refractors, and some of those other rare 5" & 6" refractors to finally come out of the collection. I'm sure you will offer those at reasonable prices as well! ....actually .

Dear John,

Thank you for your feedback.
The finderscope that is supplied with this telescope is the original GoTo Kogaku unit that is pictured.
There is no option for an alternate finderscope, as the option you are referring to is not available.
Trust this assists.

OK thanks Cris, the reason I asked is that previous communication suggested that the exact finderscope in the picture was not going to be included as it belonged to someone else (a Japanese friend?), and that another (smaller) Goto finderscope was included. Sorry, I was obviously wrong on this. John.

This matter of the finderscope is confusing people.
The finderscope that is being supplied with this telescope is the original Goto Kogaku unit, with Goto Stamped into the metalwork itself.
There is no alternate under consideration.

Yes, OK Cris, well maybe I was also "confused" when previously you only offered to sell me the scope "without" the now "original Goto Kogatu" finderscope. You did not mention it to me then that it was in fact the original Goto kogatu finderscope that you were actually removing from the scope to send to your "friend in Japan". So I was then confused when you were offering the same finderscope in this deal. All I wanted to do is to find out what you are actually offering. As you have now decided to keep the original Goto finderscope with its original scope (Good on you! ). I have now learned a lot, and I am no longer "confused"! I also hope that the "people" I have "confused" are also no longer "confused".

Thanks.
