2013 Astronomy Photographer of the Year - Results

Well having got up early to view the the results...they are now hot off the press and I would like to be the first IIS'er to congratulate Mark Gee of Oz for his stunning shot that has won the Earth and Space category and subsequently been crowned Overall Winner in this years competition, it is a spectacular image that had me mesmerised. Now as you will see there also, not only did Mark win the Earth and Space category/Overall but he also took out the People and Space category with another amazing image of people silhouetted against the rising moon.

As a side note....I was lucky enough to have my image of NGC 253 awarded a Highly Commended in the Deep Space category and I am very chuffed indeed Adam Blocks image with the Shulman 0.8m telescope of SH2-239 is pretty spectacular and a worthy winner of this category.

I would like to congratulate all the finalist images there, they are all truly amazing...with no single eyebrow raiser in my opinion (except maybe mine )

A cool thing too is it appears Mark and I were the two Aussies in the finals so I am very proud of this

HERE's a good BBC video compilation with narration of the winning shots

Mike

Yeah that lighhouse shot was a real corker. Very cool and inspiring. Well deserved. Just for the 250 steps. That's bloody dedication.

Congrats Mark and Mike, that's awesome! Well done.

I noticed there is a great looking book out again this year with all the winners and shortlisted entries, does anyone know if we get a copy of this one like we did last year?

one thing though i am contemplating using that ublelievable shot of the people in the foreground of the moonshot to start an annual rumour on how the moon is has suddenly comes closer to earth on "super" moon months ha ha!
i may become immortal with this getting trotted out every year like the mars hoax!

Amazing work and outcome for Mark! And nice work on your part too Mike.. you seem to have an eye for this comp!

They are an amazing set of images to look at. Pretty incredible what you can do in this field these days!

Thanks so much to those who send their congrats

I surfed through all the entered images on several occasions leading up to the closing day and man there were some beauties in there for sure . Marks shot grabbed my eye even then, it is a remarkable looking shot, one of the very best ever of its type IMO. In the end any number of entries could be worthy of a final 5 finish, so I certainly feel extremely honoured that one of mine was somehow able to capture the eye's of the judging panel

Yes Phil, I seem to do better when there is more than one set of eyes making the call ...hey, law of averages is more in my favour then I guess Having said that, a slight variation of this NGC 253 did receive a highly commended from his highness this year too

Thanks again

Mike

Ya done good Mike.

Mark's is a great shot too.

I personally liked the Hungarian M42 shot. SOME detail, and THEN some.

Cheers Lewi

My good mate Attila was there in London to represent me too

Attila and I started imaging as a team way back in early 1984 and we were inseparable for several years producing images and building scopes just about 24/7
