Experimenting with some wide angles.

I recently upgraded my 8" newt to a 10" but I'm waiting on some parts to arrive from the UK before I finalise my setup. In the meantime I managed to McGuyver my 550D onto a dovetail to experiment with some widefield shots.

This widefield stuff is harder than it looks! I've never been very good at processing images (being Protanopic Colour Blind doesn't help ), so any feedback is very much appreciated.

Nice pictures of Sco and Sgr !

But they are a little bit too harsh (i.e. too high contrast). In photo 3 (below right), the dark nebulas around Antares and Rho Oph are not visible at all. At this exposure they should be visible. Experiment something with the 'Levels' function of Photoshop , Gimp or Darktable. This is a very usefule function !

Thanks 'Surfer, I thought I might have gone overboard but sometimes it's hard to know if it's just my eyes.

I think my (Canon kit) lens has a fairly severe vignette which would explain the lack of nebula, I guess I'll just get a bit more picky with my framing in the future.

Cheers!

Flats should fix the vignetting as well as stopping down a little on the lens. They are looking good otherwise.
