Prof Neil DeGrasse Tyson - My Favorite Universe

Neil DeGrasse Tyson - My Favorite Universe

This course of twelve lectures is available from "The Great Courses" for $34.95.

http://www.thegreatcourses.com.au/tg...l.aspx?cid=158

Its a good buy. Once you get used to his style, which can best be described as animated (I don't think he stands still once). The lectures are presented as a class room talk and are slightly more in depth than your average TV show on similar topics. Graphics and photographs are adequate, the sort of thing you would get in a well researched classroom lecture.

I learned a few things particularly in the area of black holes and relativity. I haven't seen the last three yet. But don't be put off by the first three, he builds up in complexity, so I am looking forward to the end of the series.

Recommended. thanks for the link Suzy

Emmm Sorry must have only have been for that day (10/8/13) definitely not worth hundreds. He has another on special (not sure for how long though).

http://www.thegreatcourses.com.au/tg....aspx?cid=1816

I think it might be an idea to keep an eye on the site as it seems to have dramatic reductions from time to time.

I posted this as reply to another discussion about the same coarse, and some others I bought recently. As far as I can see, the "My favorite Universe" is still on sale at the cheap price of $34.95 download or $39.95 for DVD. Also, the "Life in the Universe" is shown in the August Catalogue for $84.95, not the high price of $254.95. I'm not sure why the web is showing the higher price. Some others are also on sale as shown below. I think the high "normal" prices are probably aimed at institutions /schools etc., and I think these can be shown to a large -public audience (Unlike your normal movie/documentary DVDs). I guess the special prices, when they come up occasionally, allow us "single" viewers to afford them also.

Experiencing Hubble: Understanding the Greatest Images of the Universe

Dark Matter, Dark Energy: The Dark Side of the Universe

Special Set Includes: (1) Understanding the Universe: An Introduction to Astronomy, 2nd Edition & (2) Skywatching: Seeing and Understanding Cosmic Wonders

Its all a bit weird because if I look on the site now (independently of my links), I see them (the ones I bought) at full price, and not the discounted prices. But, if I use my old links that I saved after having bought them at the discounted prices, I still see the discounted prices, so presumably others can still order at those discounted prices (add to cart) off those old links?? Good luck, I think they may still give the discount prices. I won't try it, because I already have them.

It would be interesting to know what their ("The Great Courses") exact policy is on this.

John.

It seems that www.thegreatcourses.com and www.thegreatcourses.com.au have different specials.

Cheers

Ron,
Yes, postage is a bit on the high side, I was charged $60 postage for my lot which is the maximum they charge once the order is over $300. If they have used FedEx as usual, it took 3 working days to get here (Adelaide).
John

Good Observation Steffen, I did not even notice there were two sites until I saw your post. For what reason, I don't know?? I think they are all sent from the USA anyway?? Mine all came from the USA anyway, and it looks as though the US site shows the most range, and has the most listed with the "Specials Prices".

Roger,
I got all mine on DVD, because I knew we would watch them on the TV as a usual DVD, without having to rely on a computer. But interested to know what the downloaded file types are?

John, Postage $30:00 so still under $70:00 for the dvds plus postage.
Oh well just all I have to do is wait

John,
there were a couple of choices, I chose itunes as I wanted to see then on my iPad, the download file came out as m4v file type. I am not sure they ar displaying correctly as think the aspect ration my be wrong. I suspect they should be 4:3 but they seem less than that, although not objectionably so.

Looks like with what rubbish is on the box tonight I will finish them.

John, I've just seen your post in there. Wow what a collection you bagged, I'm so jealous! There's a couple on your list which I would've liked, I don't think I saw them in the article though. I should have perused the site further.

I'm still waiting . It comes from the U.S. and takes 7 days they said. Ordered on the 8th so I should get mine any day now.

Agreed Ron, I had a choke attack when she said $12 for postage and I said whaaaaat, gee where is it coming from?! Turns out the toll free number I rang was linked straight to the U.S.
OH! I just saw how much you paid for postage, Ron $30 ????
That makes no sense. We're both in Queensland.

I had the catalogue and I was about 10 days over the expired sale period but she said to me since I haven't bought a course from them before I was still entitled to get it at the $29.95 price. So was considerably cheaper than on-line price of $39.95.
