EOS350d VS 20D
For those who know about canon digital SLR's I have a question for you.
What is the difference between the 350d and the 20d? I have been saving for a 350d for a while and as the price of the 20d is starting to come down I thought I should way up the difference between the two. I like the idea of the magnesium body, but otherwise I can't see a difference in them.
Thanks
Chris

I don't know about the difference. But the price of the 350D in the last week or so is coming down. I saw it advertised at Domayne last week at approx $1500 with extra lens. Today its in the weekend paper for $1388 and with a $100 cashback takes its down to $1288, incl. that extra lens.
I'd wish it could do mpeg capture as well. Does it ?

I am pretty sure it does do some form of video capture. I don't know how long for though. My main reason for getting one is for still images. I know the 350d is coming down in price as well. I was just thinking I want to have this camera for a long time, so it makes sense to pay a little more and get the magnesium body. Although with the price of the lenses it may not be economical.

There's no video capture in most DSLR's, afaik. The 350D certainly doesn't have it. Nor should you really want it to, either. The benefit of the DSLR is still capture. A small 640x480 resolution movie just wouldn't do the camera justice.
Get a video camera if you want to capture video!
The DSLR's (like the 350D) can do burst mode, and can take a series of images one after another until it fills up its buffer. It can do about 3fps.

There are quite a few differences, however image wise there isn't much in it and for astrophotography modified the 350D is probably better because it is lighter. A full comparison can be read on Bob Atkins website. It's worth a good look around Bob's website as he has some very good info on lenses etc as well.

That's good. The canon website says it can take burst captures of 3fps up to 12 images. I thought this was pretty useless.
Never mind about the 20d. I went to JB today and they had them side by side, and the 20d is huge. Not the sort of camera I want to be carrying around anywhere.

Thanks. I won't be modding it for astro. I mainly want it for a normal camera. Thanks for the link it looks like an interesting read.

I'm sure that the Canon 350D is a top camera, for both astro work and just pictures and i'd be pleased to own one, but i wouldn't even accept the crappy lenses they can supply with it for 1395.00.
If they can supply the camera, and a 18-55mm lens, and a 75-300mm lens and still sell it for 1395.00, i would hate to think what they consist of.
Talk about insulting a good camera.

Leon, base unit no lens is about $1200, with a decent 17-40mm lens add another grand. Simply value for money with the lenses packaged, then save your pennies

Thanks for that.
I thought the lens would be ok for wide field.. I mean the lens on my 300d (which cost $2000 with a gig card 18 mths ago but seems like yesterday) is not highly rated but I am happy with what I can get from it (that is all I have used to get my wide field Milky Way shots.. the stars could be smaller but that is probably just me) , with that level of exceptance would the 300mm lens be a disappointment?

Canon std lenses
Not sure why we have raised the issue of the quality of these lenses? There must be a few members on this forum who have them. Are the results so bad??
I've got one myself, but haven't had the opportunity to use it yet, so I can't comment.

from my understanding the 350 is a consumer 20d- the 350 is smaller then the 300 with a faster processor, smaller battery, and step up in noise control- i thought the 18-55mm lens with mine looked kinds crappy at 1st- but it does a good job, i wanted a reasonably priced 70-300 lens and decided on a Tamron- it works in auto focus and has the LD glass in it- pretty hard to beat for the US price of $149 (close-out)- after i got it, i noticed it wasnt chinese born, but a made in japan lens- im quite satisfied with it- john

I moved away from the Canon and ended up getting a Nikon D50. I got the twin lens kit which includes a 18-55 lense and a 55-200 lense. I also got the Sandisk Ultra III 1GB SD card so I can use the rapid burst mode. It is only a 6.3MP camera, but I am very happy with the pictures I am getting out of it.
