MIT Technology Review on March 11, 2013 reports on a paper submitted to
the Journal of Cosmology this month entitled "The Polonnaruwa meteorite: oxygen
isotope, crystalline and biological composition" by researchers at Cardiff University in
the UK.
On 29 December 2012, a fireball rained down over Polonnaruwa province in
Sri Lanka and witnesses reported the strong odour of tar or asphalt.
Some 628 stone fragments made their way to Cardiff for analysis but only three
were clearly identified as meteorites.
The researchers claim that "the stones contain fossilised biological structures fused
into the rock matrix and that their tests clearly rule out the possibility of terrestrial
contamination."
