Jupiter 23-05-06

Hi all,

Out in the freezing cold I went out and tried doing some more shots at Jupiter with the 4" scope. I think this is about as good as they are going to get from the 4" scope, the size is limiting the detail I am able to get. At least I was able to get a little of the GRS in before the clouds came in again.

Hi Andrew,

Why didn't you use the 8" f7.1, or hasn't it got a mount?

What sort of 4" telescope is it?

There is detail there. The large one slightly out of focus and the bottom looks like it was captured with too much gain which burned out the bright areas.

The two at the top corners are very nice, exposure, focus and detail look to be spot on.

Hope you don't mind my comments just trying to help.

hey at this stage of the game, any comments get taken on board and processed. The 8" is waiting for a mount, which will be near the end of the year unfortunately. The 4" scope is actually a TAL-1 4.5" F805mm reflector. Great optics, would love it in the 12" range

the top middle was with the toucam pulled out a little, like having a tiny extension added. Thanks for your comments.

Nice capturing there Andrew considering the aperture of the scope. Very well done mate!

Hi Andrew
I took a couple of avi's of Jupiter with my 4" refractor the same night that I took the 11" SCT images posted recently (15 May). Here's one processed fairly hastily. Visually Jupiter is much cleaner and sharper in the refractor (the moons are always perfect little circles as opposed to squashy splodges in the SCT). However for getting detail in webcam imaging I think the image scale is too small with a 4" and the light gathered is also much less, forcing you to increase the gain and causing more noise. It's a case of a bigger but less good telescope winning by sheer brute force. I read an article in Sky & Telescope that suggested an increase in aperture to 14" SCT will bring in more and more quality images using webcam & Registax, even if optics are less than perfect.
