Classic! Beware car eating cows ahead. Or they use cars as muzzles to stop them biting anyone.

Ask someone who has run into a cow/bull/buffalo on the road. A roo might be a hundred or so kilos. One of those could be a tonne.

Good picture

Not half so funny if you've worked on a station though. Two years ago we came across a big brindle bull that had a bad reputation for flipping cars. He lived up to it!

Three buggies pinned him and started him off to the yards. He realised what was going on. Stuck his head under one of the cars and flipped it like it was nothing! Poor guy in the car was hanging upside down with no windows while old mean and nasty was circling. We all heard a meek over the radio. I'm sure he had to change undies later on when we got back.

Finally got him to walk with a mob only to see him bolt as soon as we came to a creek line to again spend his days free terrorising musterers and their cars.

Many years ago, when I lived in the wheatbelt, some of my colleagues were in a car travelling back to base when the car hit a bull. Fortunately no one was seriously hurt, however, the front passenger had his window fully down and, unfortunately, got showered with bull dung! No bullsh*t!!! Apart from what the passenger wore

Supposedly a true story. I never saw it first hand mind but that was the story going around work.

Another time, the driver arrived at the depot office and advised that he car was run over by a horse! And he said with a completely straight face too.

When we went outside to have a look at the car, sure enough, there was a nice hoofprint on the bonnet and another one on the side panel. Apparently, he saw the horse coming across the road and slammed on his breaks and then the horse jumped on the bonnet to avoid being hit and kicked the side panel on departure.

There were a few funny incidences with work cars, but these are the only two involving large animals, that I am aware of, for the Merredin depot. Unfortunately, there were a few tragic accidents as well. But that happens when you drive hundreds of thousands of kms.

Mmmmm.. I know someone who in his younger days was rather gung-ho, until a collision with a horse, 25 years ago in the Hunter on the Broke Road near Pokolbin - he came round a fast corner to find a horse in the middle of his lane and no alternative but to go under the belly of the horse.

He ducked, fortunately, as the impact tore all the windows and roof off. An instant convertible conversion, you might say.

Horse was killed, and the car went over the edge into a soft paddock...

He has been a very conservative driver ever since...

What to not to hit while driving:

Cats, dogs, rabbits and other small animals. These present little problems as they all tend to go under the car.

Roos. Nasty they tend to go up and smash grilles and windows.

Flocks of Galahs are interesting. They have a take off pattern that circles across the road as they take off. Under 80 MPH they will pass over the car. at 100 MPH they will hit your windscreen. Yuk what a mess!

(experience over many years)

I haven't hit people, cows, or horses!

A long time ago my wife and I worked on an iron-ore mine driving Cat 789's. One night there was a cow on the haulroad and my wife didn't see it untill it was too late. She told me how she saw it's big brown eyes looking up at her then...bump bump, over she went.
The cow was flattened and had to be scraped off the road by a loader. Poor bugger, what a way to go!!

I've seen a photo of a 4WD which made sudden contact with a buffalo - not a pretty sight, there wasn't much left of the rig
