Colours at Night

I've been meaning to ask this question for a while. I am reminded of it during bright moon periods.

When the moon is full or even just over half, I can see some colours. I have tested myself. As the light fades, in the evening, blue and red objects fade first. They become more or less black in appearance.

However I found green and orange seem to fade last but if the moon is out I can still see the colour. With no moon I can not see any colour. Just shades of grey. I have good night vision. I realised that when I was in the Army when some people walked into trees etc. and I was asking why. "Could you not see that tree?" and the answer was, "er, No!" My response, "Blind bugger".

Seeing colour in low light puzzles me. I wonder if it is common? Any answers or input is deemed invited.

Cheers
