Coiled cables

Hi All,

I want to make up a remote control for my camera, and somewhere I have read that it is possible to make coiled cable (similar to that on phones etc), by wrapping the cable around a piece of dowelling, and baking it, heating it, or boiling it etc, to set the coil on the cable. It may have been on this Forum, or it may have been elsewhere, but wherever it is, I can't find it. Does anyone have any idea how to accomplish this please?

Regards,

Mike

Thanks SirDystic,

I have a 300D, and in fact have already made a remote for it out of a 2.5mm mono jack plug and an instantaneous press button switch, works perfectly, and cost $2.50 ono for the bits from Dick Smith, but the wires are untidy, and I thought that making a coiled cable would tidy it up a bit. I also have the RC1 remote IR release, but you have to be able to point that at the IR sensor, and that isn't always that easy, especially if you are behind the camera. Thanks for the tip.

Regards,

Mike

I am telling you that you will regret the coiled wire. it gets caught up with other stuff and is nearly impossible to untangle when you want it that way. I just let mine hang, if it is not breezy. you will get used to it. it is when you slew to a few objects to image that you will find the problem.

Houghy has a point my jury is out as to which I prefer, I made a serial for my 350 for use on the puter, with an opto coupler and 2 LED,s for shutter open and shutter closed. great for trouble shooting which port is which.

Thanks hOughy and SirD for your input. In fact it isn't just for astrophotography that I have made this up, but I will take your comments on board when I use it for such.

Regards,

Mike

Do not use coiled cable..... besides what Houghy said, because it is always under tension, whenever you pull it (by taking into your hand whatever is at this side) you will pull the telescope or whatever on the other side as well...
