Thumbs up Problem with USB solved, help much appreciated!

I have very interesting problem with USB ports on my desktop (GA-8S661FXM775).

From the moment I was inserting the memory stick onwards (possibly just coincidence?), XP recognises only keypad and mouse on all ports, and nothing else (everything is marked as "Unknown device", with no drivers loaded).

I reinstalled USB drivers, but to no avail...
Any suggestions/ideas?
Thanks in advance!

You probably tried it already but...
first remove all the unknown devices in Device Manager
then install the drivers followed by inserting the usb device.
Sequence is important.

USB wierdness

I am a bit late on this but assuming you are running XP then try removing sall the installed USB devices in device manager - the issue is - you cannot do this normally you have to use the show hidden devices option and this requires an environment variable set up:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
  2. At a command prompt, type the following command , and then press ENTER: set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
  3. Type the following command a command prompt, and then press ENTER: start devmgmt.msc
  4. Troubleshoot the devices and drivers in Device Manager.

NOTE: Click Show hidden devices on the View menu in Device Manager before you can see devices that are not connected to the computer.
  5. When you finish troubleshooting, close Device Manager.
  6. Type exit at the command prompt.

Wow John, than you!

I ended up with myriads of those hidden devices (as shown on screen capture).
What should I do with them? delete them all?

After uninstalling them all, this is what remained:

However, it didn't help - when I inserted memory stick, it was not recognised as such (unknown device again! ).
Please note, LED on memory stick is ON, so it is active.. but no communication with XP

Thanks heaps in advance!

Bo I had a problem like this after upgrading a PC running XP and although I never found out what caused it I didn't really care once the USB ports were working.
All I did was used the USB to Mini-DIN adapter that came with the Microsoft USB Keyboard and Mouse I bought as part of upgrade. Once I had remove it from using the USB devices the USB ports worked and the MS USB mouse was fine too.

I had no further problem til I upgraded to Win7 and my USB WiFi modem now gives intermittent problems.

Yes, weird..
The funny thing is, USB worked for months prior to this incident (inserting memory stick), even with that same memory stick (could it be that automatic system update did something? I am now tempted to re-install windows XP from original disk..)

I would try updating your chipset drivers from sis first of all, if you put service pack 3 on then that could be the issue. I'll have a search later i may have a pci usb card you can have if you have no luck.

Is all USB broken or just this one device?

Is this a USB stick with built-in encryption or does it have something on it that might auto-run? Pretty much the only updates M$ are doing for XP are security related so either of those might now be considered dangerous and disabled your USB stick.

Andrew,
All of USB ports can recognise keypad and mouse (and floppy appears to be working but very often I have "not formatted disk" error, even after some of the files are listed), but nothing else, regardless of load (even externally powered devices are not recognised, for example USB HD)
That is why I am puzzled - because ports appear to be OK (when mouse or keyboard is connected), but anything else is just "unknown".
The stick I tried to use when this happened (it could be pure coincidence) was working previously, and it doesn't have any sort of encryption or protection.

The other option is a system restore, Its always the last resort for hardware that "use to work"

Either via safe mode (F8 during startup, post BIOS) or by using the run command type rstrui.exe and follow the onscreen instructions.

The other thing you can do, is turn off the pc, remove the power cord, whilst the power is off hold the power button for 30 seconds, this is called a power flee test, and for unknown reasons it sometimes works

Now, why I didn't think of this!
Because, I had an issue with audio adapter on the same motherboard last year, and this procedure (removing of the power cord) solved the problem then.
Obviously, this motherboard has a problem (something is prone to latch up).

Million thanks !!

A flea power (or static power) dump is sometimes required after a system switches to +5V standby mode, so it's not surprising it results in USB issues.
