Mitchell Falls Moonrise

One of the most stunning places in our whole Kimberley adventure was Mitchell Falls. The scale of the falls is enormous – no picture can do it justice. The constant sound of the crashing water echoing through the gorge, the bright orange rock walls as the setting Sun blazed against them, and the stunning rising of the almost Full Moon gave me one of my fondest memories of the trip.

I hope what I’ve captured here evokes some of the same emotions in you as it did for me.

The range in brightness to the naked eye was extremely difficult to capture in a single photo. After the sun had set, the bottom of the gorge was dark and yet the sky was still quite bright. To try and capture the scene I bracketed 3 exposures and created a HDR composite.

Canon 5D Mk 2, Samyang 14mm lens, ISO100, f/8. 1s exposure (average).

Thanks for looking.

I think this is a beautiful image Mike.. the HDR is done well. Certainly makes me want to visit, on a night with less moon!

Thanks Phil, appreciate your feedback.

I did captured some night stuff there, but the Moon was very bright. Ken and I walked back there later that night and stayed on the rock ledge overnight.

Lovely panorama Mike. I like the almost painterly HDR here – it suits the scene quite well. It might be worth trying to bring out the subtle cloud patterns a little more – there is some nice detail especially in the top left half of the sky.

The star burst effect of the waterfall where it plunges into the lower pool is fantastic.

Cheers

Dennis

Very masterly Mike. That photo is superb. I love the delicate hues as well as the framing and the moon. Gorgeous.

Greg.

Lovely scene and composition and doesn't have that overdone HDR look. Great work, Mike!

Thanks Rick, I tried not to overdo it. I think it's subtle enough
