Interesting, did he say it would never be found because he believed it didn't exist or just that we(humans) were unlikely to detect it?

It was more out of his own amusement really and the fact that science's greatest advances come about from unexpected results. If they couldn't find it then a whole re-think would of been needed. I doubt he actually disagreed with the fact it could exist.
