Smile ES 30mm 82deg v ES 24mm 82deg.

Which one would you recommend I should buy, for use in my scopes, (see signature). I want as wide as possible field of view, but not so much as to overly compromise exit pupil size.(I am 67 with v. good vision). The 30mm in the 22.2"(560mm) gives 100x with EP 5.6mm and the 24mm gives 125x with EP 4.48mm. I currently am using a GSO 30mm 68deg.(OK but not great). Also looking ahead to when I finish my 25.2" (640mm) f4.7 mirror. In the case of the 30mm the EP will increase to 6.4mm. The 24mm EP 5.12mm. Suggestions please.

Buy them both while they're on special and our dollar is high; when you figure out which you like best you'll likely get most of your cost back.
There is a 25mm 100 degree on the way but eye relief figures aren't known yet.

If you are considering these for binoviewing wouldn't perhaps the ES 68 be a slightly better option? Additionally, 2nd TV eyepieces come up on the classifieds all the time and some great bargins are certainly to be had there as well.

Get the whole set minus the 14mm and get the 100 deg 14mm in its place... I'm about to add a few more to my collection while they are on sale. Best value out there.

Not meaning to get too far off topic but has anyone had a chance to do a comparison between the ES30mm and the Terminagler (31T5)?

A brand new ES30mm(82) is less than half the cost of a new 31T5 and I am just curious how TV can possibly compete and stay in business if the ES is even half as good as the Nagler. Although we love to joke about the glamour of green paint on eyepieces I haven't encountered that many people in the AA community who are genuinely blinded by little green letters when something just as good at half the price is available. I am tempted to get a ES30 myself so any feedback would be welcomed.

Near enough to no difference on axis with the Televue just a little better off axis from memory; same result with the ES40mm/Panoptic 41 but a bigger gap in the off axis performance, with the Panoptic being better.

There was a popular review on CN which said a 24mm panoptic had worse transmission than the ES24mm 68 degree, but the panoptic was a few years old and likely didn't have the latest coatings. I couldn't see any difference in transmission. I looked at few different nebulae and compared the extent of faint nebulosity and visibility of the faintest stars, with direct and averted vision.

I like the easy cleaning afforded by the waterproofing - sit some isopropyl on the eyelens for 20 seconds, wash it off under the tap and wick away the last drop with tissue.

Overall Televue has a better quality product but it's hard to argue with the difference in cost.

One warning: if you get a faulty eyepiece you're up for over $100 in US return post to get it replaced.

Hi Guys/Girls,

Finally decided on the ES 30mm 82deg, even though the exit pupil will be quite large at around 5.6mm for my current optic (560mm primary mirror). The 30mm gives me a FOV of 0.82deg (49.2min.arc) and FOV of 1.37deg (1deg 22min.arc) for my 14" dob. For me max.FOV for "sweeping" and for framing globs (Omega Centaurus, Tucanae 47,etc), and of course other expansive DSOs, is a priority. One of the downsides of increasing aperture is decreasing FOVs. Thanks all for your input.

Stephen.

That's good news, though I'd be cautious until there's more information about that supplier. I can't find any phone number or physical address listed on their site.
