The beginnings of a DIY Peltier cool box

Decided to try building a Peltier cool box for my DSLR.

The box is the case from an old PC power supply, heat sinks and fans also out of an old PC (Northbridge heat sink and fan on the cold side, CPU heatsink and fan on the hot side).

Peltier unit is arriving tomorrow: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=ZP9100

Am thinking of using polystyrene foam or corflute for insulation.

Its all kinda heavy even now, so it might not be workable, but apart from the angle bracket its basically all from bits i had lying around the study and workshop so no great loss if its a no go.

(i have several other hot side CPU heatsink fan combos i can also try)

Hi Richard,

It'll be interesting to see your results.
have you seen this? http://ghonis2.ho8.com/rebelmod450d16d.html
you might find some projects on this forum as well.

are you planning on forced cooling or just radiative cooling?
it'll help if you use two fans, one for the hot side and heatsink and one for the cooler side. should also help if you keep the inner area as small as possible, insulated and sealed.
i wonder if there are risks with condensation on the electronics.
good luck.

Thanks. I have already seen that link, which provided the initial inspiration to give it a go myself. Like his design I have a fan + heatsink inside the box as well as outside, and will be using a Peltier device as a heatpump with a laptop power supply to deliver the 4+ amps at 15V. His box is smaller than mine, however I already had a box that was about the right size, so i thought i'd try that first.

I am also concerned about condensation, and I'll be doing some test runs without the camera in place first to see just how bad it is.

There will be no condensation on your camera - it will be always warmer than cold plate.

Search this forum for Avandonk's (Bert's) posts , he did it and he is still using it (I think)
