Hi everyone,

im new to IIS, signed up last month, I probably should have posted here first and introduced my self rather than heading straight for the astrophotography forum, as i have had a couple of posts over there.
I live in the South West of Western Aus and have only taken up astrophotography and viewing more so in the past 6 months, however ive had an interest in astronomy and the universe for some time longer.
Ive got a LX200 12" ACF and an STL-11000 (in the mail), will be interesting to see how this combination works - it will be a steep learning curve i guess.

You may want to grab a reducer as well, it is a difficult beast to tame at that focal length.

Lovely down that way for skies, the STL 11k has a internal guide chip yes? if so then your only hassel will be if your running in Alt Az mode that you will get field rotation. This is why people generally run them with a Super Wedge in Polar mode.

Brendan; Your not so far away, would be good to catch up some time. At the moment im running in alt az mode, however im planing to mount the scope permanently on a homemade wedge and pier.

Poita; yes 3000mm FL will be difficult. I have a meade 3.3 reducer which would bring it down to a nice FL, but that reducer on this scope with the stl11000 chip would give severe vignetting i would think, havent tried it yet though. Maybe a different reducer would be the order.

Any thoughts on the optical quality of the meade 3.3 reducer, i tried it once and it seamed to display chromatic aberations around the fringes?

Thought as much well you wont have much trouble guiding at 3000mm, your issue will come with atmospherics to which Adaptive Optics (AO) is what you wanna look at. It doesn't mean that you wont get good images but the stars bloat a bit due to the "wobbling" of the air above.

Already there mate I have my grad position signed sealed and delivered and currently working full time. There is alot more freedom than Uni.... your always looking over your shoulder and your time is not your own. at least with work, you can leave the office/jobsite and thats it till 8am tomorrow!
