The Deep South

Hi all,

Drygalski is the crater at the right of the image (79.3 deg South). 149km wide and 4km deep.

Named after the German scientist Erich von Drygalski (1865-1949), who lead an Antarctic expedition in 1901-3. Drygalski was the first balloonist in Antarctica soaring to 1600 feet and telephoning his comments back to the deck of their ice - bound ship, the Gauss(after Carl Friederich who also has a lunar crater).
The Cabeus group of craters (the impact site of the LCOSS probe in 2009) is to the left of the Drygalski with the peaks M4 and M5 in the background.

DMK21, 22"Newt F4.5, stack of 400 out of 2500 in Registax. Seeing = ordinary.

Thanks Geoff. The name of each crater is a story in itself and usually a fascinating one.
