I decided to try a SSD in my Dell Inspiron 6400. Gee hasnt it made a difference. Was a sale on Corsair Force 3 SSD's I got the 60gb one. Probably overdit it getting a SATAIII SSD as the Inspiron is only SATA1 I think but still, its made a definate difference in speeds both in boot times and load times of all software, even web browsing is faster. Star Atlas pro loads up very fast.
Runs a bit cooler too as the SSD uses less power only 2 watts or so according to the specs.
Putting a SATAIII SSD in a newer notebook would make a bigger difference as the interface might be SATAII or even SATAIII for the newest machines.
So if you want to speed up your machine, go SSD. Cons are SSD capacities are still fairly small so for desktops use a mechanical HDD as a secondary drive and install Windows on the SSD and watch your machine fly!
Installing the SSD was simple, slide it in as I would a normal drive, boot up, XP install program says the drive no probs and installed normally.

Yes I will never defrag it. cant help the swap file though dont want to risk running windows without one. I looked up the SSD website they say no chnages to the OS need be made.

Scott ... been wanting to do this for ages .... waiting for the prices to drop ... good move though .... and they are right about not defragging the SSD.
An SSD is hands down the most amazing performance boost you can get for a computer. In laptops, if you need more storage you can remove the DVD drive and pop in a 2nd hard drive instead, then a 60GB boot drive is plenty for the OS and main apps, and doesn't the laptop just fly with an SSD on board?
