If Acronis can't handle a program running in the background it will tell you so. However when making a backup image of you HDD it is best to shut down all programs that are likely to be making changes to the HDD while the back up is in progress.

I normally use Drive Image and that is not fussy about background programs but Drive Image does not work on Vista or Windows 7 where I use Acronis. Always store images on an auxilliary drive for safety

The most important thing to have is a recovery disk that will boot if all fails so that a saved image can be restored.
