Finally! Riccardi-Honders first light test image

After an eternity of clouds and snow I finally got two clearish nights. What is amazing about this is that they were two nights in a row and around a new moon.

I spent the first night calibrating FocusMax (in between runs into the hospital for emergencies -- crazy week this week, the ICU's are packed full). Last night I did G2V calibration and then imaged M13.

The RHA rides flawlessly on the AP1200. It guides perfectly with the ST-402 e-finder setup. Focusing was wonderful using a Microtouch motor (I use Robofocus on all my other scopes, but Roland suggested the Microtouch for this scope, and I must say I think he was right. The Microtouch attached to the 1:10 reducing knob of the Feathertouch focuser gives perfect V-curves every time. Also, it is
so quite I had to look at it a few times to make sure it was actually moving the drawtube!)

I imaged using only RGB filters with each sub of 150 seconds. The stars came out perfectly round across the entire KAI-11000M chip. I also started another image in Cepheus with my usual 600 seconds subs; still the stars were perfectly round.

Here it is:

It may not be the best M13 out there, but for first light test image I am pretty pleased. I will be putting the scope through its paces as the sky permits. After I get used to the scope then I will trade out the STL for my PL-16803 and give it a go.

Tom,
That is a remarkably detailed image (gorgeous colour too). Unusual scope from what I've read but a bit heavy! It'll be interesting to see the results of the bigger camera with this.

Regards
Keith

That photo really has some impact. Wide-ish field wiith small faint fuzzies in the background, great colour and lovely stars. Really like your effort as it's a cracker.

Tom,

A very nice image, that seems to showcase this new design well. Nice stars !

I can see what looks similar to the same effects of aperture restriction that showed up in the early FSQ106's on some of the brighter peripheral stars. "Dark angels" !
There is a double shadow on each side of the star running at 45° NE-SW top left, NW-SE top right, NE-SW bottom right (but barely visible) and no suitable stars in the bottom left corner to inspect.

Could be collimation, optical design ? - I dont think its processing or diffraction given the orientation about the centre

I would expect this to show up more clearly on the 16803

Cheers

Rally

Lovely image Tom.

If that's a test, I'm definitely looking forward to serious stuff.

Looking good Tom, been a while we missed you!

Wouldn't expect anything else from an AP (and you!)

I tested my AG12 recently too after frustrating weather and commitments held me up (and still are ), not having an observatory doesn't help either ...but at least my ASA experiece just feels like a bad dream now

Super image Tom....
wouldn't expect anything less with this scope and its price tag...
Not to mention the person behind the instrument.
Picking up some solid structure on Ngc 6207 as well as pristine star resolution.

Nice to see what else it can do in the future!

Rich

I admire your patience Tom. The first clear night in ages and you spend all night adjusting a focuser? Wow.

Looking good.

I had to look hard to see what Rally was talking about. It seems to me thats just filter reflections.

Greg.

Very nice Tom, Your new scope looks like it will be a winner. Detail is great and lots happening in the background.
I cannot wait to see some of your dusty shots through this beast.
