Canopus spectrum

Dear All
Another spectrum I took as a trial after fixing the spectroscope. I took this really to create a continuum of a known bright star to then use the continuum to normalise other images.
I took images in 4 regions going from about 4600A to the IR planning on joining them all together. Unfortunately I stuffed up and missed a bit so I couldn't join them all together. The image only contains the H beta line but has lots of other little ripples that are other elements starting to be seen in this F0 star.
I'm pleased that my spectrum so closely matches the catalogue one.

What camera, slit width and what exposure??

The camera is my ST9e with 20um pixels binned 1x2. The slit was at its minimum. The exposure was 60 secx5.

Hi Terry,

Canopus is one of the standard stars taken using the UVES spectrograph on the VLT so you can see how well the little wiggles line up too :-)

To download a Visual Spec compatible spectrum from this page:

Find the star you want and click on "plot"
Tick the "ascii file" box, chose the range you want and click "plot"
A link to a txt file will appear. Download this
Change the file type from txt to uvs and load it into Vspec using "load"
"profile", selecting uvs file type in the drop down box
