World wind

There's a article in the latest AU sky and telescope about World wind a Nasa earth/moon mapping program much like Google earth . You can download it from here http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/ its a hefty one though. Pretty cool with heaps of features check it out , one cool feature is a update on surface phenomena like bush fires where you can a updated image for that area

Persist with it.. It is cool..! Much nicer that Google earth.
Why don't you want .NET Geoff? More and more apps are coming out that are based on it, so you'll have to bite the bullet eventually. It's not that bad.. You'll never notice that it's there, except for the pesky asp.net user that you can delete anyway.
Cheers

Can't Robby, my ISP times out at 4 hours. That only gives me a 5 minute window to open the site, set up the download, and at the end of the download do the accepting, load to file etc. If I am slow in any part of the procedure and it cuts out it will be a waste of 4 hours. Doesn't worry me though, I can live without it.

Ken, maybe consider a download manager like ReGet. If you drop out while downloading it will pick up where it left off whn you go back online, usually
