The Trials of Galileo

Nearly 400 years after being tried by the Roman Catholic Inquisition, Galileo again faces charges of heresy. Leading scientists, scholars, barristers, politicians and churchmen take part in a unique performance event staged by the University of NSW and filmed by Compass. With exclusive interviews and behind the scenes coverage, this Compass special brings the drama and highlights of the re-trial together in a one hour television special. Galileo was found guilty of supporting the Copernican theory that the Earth revolved around the Sun, and not vice versa. His trial was considered the defining moment in the relationship between religion and science, authority and free thought. How will Galileo be judged 400 years later?

I had known that this was on but I'd forgotten.
Will set the video because I need an early night.

Watch online

The one hour ABC television program, "The Trials of Galileo" can be viewed online at
http://www.abc.net.au/compass/s2867077.htm

A full transcript of the program also appears there.

Filmed live at the Clancy Auditorium at UNSW, this highly entertaining and often
very humorous performance includes Julie McCrossin as The Judge, Julian
Burnside QC as the defence counsel, Anna Katzmann SC, who is head of the
NSW Bar Association represents the prosecution, ex Mount Kuring-Gai resident
and astrophysicist Dr Charley Lineweaver appears as Christopher Clavius,
Bob Carr appears as Cosimo de Medici, Dr Paul Collins appears as
Cardinal Roberto Bellarmine, Msgr Tony Doherty plays Pope Urban VIII and the
ever popular Fred Watson plays Galileo.

Astute observers will spot David Malin in the audience.

Highly recommended.

Did anyone see in the newspaper that his finger is on display in Italy.
I cant exactly remember the details but I think that 100 years after he died they cut off his fingers. Then last year they found them.
it's in today's West Australian.

ps google it....creepy!

Maybe we can extract some DNA and make a clone of him.

Believe it or not, there was discussion last year as to the possibility of
attempting to extract DNA from the remains.

There was the hope by some that perhaps the degenerative eye disease
that caused him to go blind could be shown to have a genetic origin.

Some practitioners in the art of extracting ancient DNA believed the process would
be difficult.

However, any hope of cloning the great man in order to make a guest appearance
at your next local star party looks unlikely.

Article here on ABC web site -

Another puzzle is who was the women that was buried beside him?

I wouldn't touch those fingers. You never know where they've been…

Cheers
