New years eve

Hi all,
I was thinking about setting up some telescopes for my niece and nephews on New Years Eve as we will all be together and it is the only night that they are allowed to stay up late (also there will be no moon and I hate to miss an opportunity

).
Seeing as it is New Years Eve, I was wondering what would happen if they were looking through a telescope when someone let off fireworks? Would it hurt their eyes? Is there any danger?

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Not stupid ...I've often thought about this! I can't answer this though, but to have a guess...no lasting ill effects?

It's certainly not a stupid question Jodie. The sudden flare would probably cause them a little night blindness in that eye for a few minutes, but very unlikely it would cause any real damage. Unlike looking at the sun there is no damaging radiation coming from the firework, just bright light and while intense bright light, particularly when it is sustained can cause problems, its unlikely in this situation. Just think if you would look at them through a pair of binoculars and extend that to a telescope

hmm... interesting question. I wouldnt think there'd be lasting effects either. but i am not an expert so dont take my word for it.

Thanks for your replies. I feel a little more confidant now. The parents would shoot me if I hurt their kids.

This reminds me of Star Camp in Ballarat when we went to the observatory. One of the kids was looking through the eyepiece when an IIS member (and it wasn't me) took a flash photo down the tube...must admit it was pretty funny!
