Question Digibox Advice

I am reluctantly coming to the conclusion that I will have to get digital TV if I want to watch a program in the same year it was made.
Any suggestions for a set-top box? Ones to steer clear of? Features to look for? Our area has pretty spotty TV reception, even with a booster, so any hints on how to grab more signal would also be much appreciated

I'm not after pay TV, just a box that picks up the 'free-to-air' digital stations.

Many thanks,
Peter
