16 minutes in a sucker hole - M42 from the doghouse plus a 50min shot

7timer indicated to me this morning that tonight was going to be clear, and it ended up clearing this evening after 7pm with a full sucker hole by 7.40 - then i tried to redo the southern pleiades - only to be thwarted by low fast moving cloud. I quickly spun the scope around to see a setting Orion - so by the time i focused the Ed127 and found a guide star the cloud was getting closer - the shots i took ended up being affected by severe light pollution, high and low cloud. But anyway some photons are better than none - i love the observatory - easy to pack it in....

for the record - 8 x 2 minute shots iso 800 processed in Pixinsight1.59

Bravo David, BRAVO

I had to go look at stoves and cooktops for our new kitchen (damaged in a fire). I neeeearly went out to Kurri but it just looked a tad too fickle to go all that way armed with a new as yet untested kit, I would rather a high degree of certainty of clear skies for my first "test" night out there, given all the tries and tribulations that are bound to appear first up...god dam it! I wish I had an observatory in my backyard

(In my best Homer Simpson voice) Mmm...Observatory.

Spending ages setting up with no chance of polar aligning, a slight chance of a sucker hole & a greater chance of unseen tropical downpour just doesn't get me jumping to my feet.

David you're a lucky man to be in the Doghouse.

yes it is good not to do all of those things for an evening's imaging. It has happened several times to me where i have set up and then the cloud rolled in and had to pack up without even drift aligning. it is a pathetic image, but its mine and i took it out of the observatory - so to me its special - Just like me

I was watching a Toyota Yaris advert on telly last night - they are worth only slightly more than my camera+filterwheel+filters ...can't see millions of lightyears into space with them though

So..? ya wanna borrow my car?

Mike

New image - 50 minutes before the cloud rolled in again

tried the same area last night - gee i love the observatory. What i thought was going to be a long night ended up only being 50 odd minutes as the cloud rolled in. Have done a quick process just to show the difference in length of time for the shot. 50 minutes iso 800 ed127 and the cooled camera and a very quick stack in DSS and processed in Pixinsight 1.6 - the focus looks a little soft for some reason - could be due to the high cloud and i know the trap region is too bright but i forgot to take some short exposures

Not bad Dave, for a short and dirty shot through the muck

Second shot alright too, but as you said the Trap' region is a little overcooked. Hey, you could "cheat"...cut and paste the Trap from your first image into the second one and feather the edge to blend it in
