I have just added a wireless network to my computer and laptop, running through a Wireless-g broadband router. I want to be able to print from the laptop using the network into the main computer, can this be done? I have tried on my own without success.
you want all ip addresses to be similiar ie 192.168.0.1 or one computer, 192.168.0.2 for another. the wireless router will usually give all computers an address etc.
you want them all to be part of the same workgroup. from memory windows has a default setting of "workgroup"
also Norton Internet/firewall settings will block by default a network, so you need to configuire your firewall to accept the range 192.168.0.1 mask 255.255.255.0 as an internal network.
not sure how proficient you are, but if you can give me a quick run down of your computers, what platform ie windows? any firewalls, then we should be right to get it going!
That's exactly the system I have here at the farm. We have three portable computers scattered around the house and an old PIII in the office with the printer.
Use Dlink router to satellite Broadband.
Under XP set up the wireless network ( settings) on each machine so that they all match. No need in my case to set IP addresses, this is done automatically when a new machine logs on/ off. If one machine has the printer attached and you set up for printer file/ sharing then any other machine can use it.
OKay I am running Windows XP home on both computers. The desktop has the ADSL modem and wireless router and printer. How do I find out what computer has what IP address? The IP addy is assigned by our service provider. I am okay with computers but these new systems have be buggered.
Ok, first thing to do is go to each computer and work out if it is getting an IP address from your adsl modem that will allow them to talk to each other.
My wireless router is assigning IP addresses 10.0.0.1 with a mask of 255.255.255.0 the gateway ie adsl router/modem (internal IP 10.0.0.138).
See what IP address and mask is on each machine and what gateway. If they are all similiar ie 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.2 10.0.0.3, then first step is done and working
last step is to make sure the computers all have the same workgroup name, ie all belong to the same group.from memory, a new computer will have the name "workgroup" in the workgroup section. My computers are part of a corporate Domain called precons.local, but for home networks, you use the workgroup!
If this is all present, then you should be able to share folders and printers on computers.
If not working, then more in depth trouble shooting will be necessary.
