Daylight Saving : By State
Here is a ISS poll of ICE members to decide the rough distribution by States being either;
- Queensland / Northern Territory
- Western Australia
- Rest of Australia (NSW, South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania)
- Other (Overseas)
Only one answer. Yes or no for daylight savings. or

Queensland had a vote years ago and said "No".
Anyone who moved to Qld since the vote, should not be able vote "YES" as they new what they were in for when they came to Qld. If they want Daylight savings they can always leave

Interesting comment, I moved to QLD 11 years ago, (From Melb) and until that time I LOVED daylight savings, wouldnt be without it, now that I live here I would hate to have it, its so hot during summer months that the cooling breezes of the evenings would be missed an hour later, our kids wouldnt get to sleep because of the later heat etc. What people need to realise is that the east coast of QLD is as far east of Melbourne as Adelaide is west, we dont need the daylight to be extended here, its hot enough now without making the evenings hotter and the mornings cooler. we cant mow our lawns after 7pm as it is not allowed by the shire yet the ONLY time to mow your lawns in summer here is late in the daylight when it is cooler. Come here and experience life before arbitrary decisions are made on these issues. Melbourne needs and deserves daylight savings, Brisbane does not.

Quite simply, DLS is a wonderful thing for the southern states due to the variation in length of day/night with the seasons, but makes no sense for qld or NT. WA is an odd one out but having a big population majority in the south it makes sense for them too.

I came from NSW lived there all my life and it was great with dls as a kid i could play out side untill 8.30 in the summer.
I have lived in WA for 7 years now and we just finished out 3rd year of trialing dls before we vote yet again if we are going to have it.
I for one will vote no to dsl as it gets very hot in the afternoon here and the sooner the night comes the better it would be, because the state runs from north to south of the whole country it effects different places in different ways.
If you got temps above 40 at 3pm in the afternoon you would want the night as soon as possible.

I grew up in Canada with daylight savings time. Even with it, sunrise in the summer was around 4:30am and sunset around 10:00pm. I always hated DST and found it to be a general PITA. Saskatchewan, the province next to where I grew up, didn't have DST and I always envied them for it.
So now I am in Australia, working for an office in California. They have DST there, but it runs 180 degrees out of phase with DST here. Were DST implemented in Queensland, instead of just a 1 hour shift twice a year, I would see a two hour shift against California, but it would take place in two stages on and two stages off due to differences in start and end dates. Meetings that are at 8:00am for me part of the year would shift to 7:00am and then to 6:00am a week or two later. Ick, no thanks.
I don't get the argument that DST in any form is good for business. It just adds an extra layer of complication in planning meetings etc. I much prefer doing business with my colleagues in Japan and China, who are on a fixed time offset just like Queensland.

Wanted : More Queenslanders
Interesting results so far.
We still need more Queenslanders for an ideas on their views on DST!
(Suggestion: To trick the Queenslanders to take on DST we should call it QST - then they would go for it like seagulls on a hot chip! )

I am amazed at how many astronomers have voted for less night sky!! I think we should go the other way and start daylight wasting time

I'm a QLD'er that has moved to VIC and I voted "no" in the original elections in Qld and I would still vote "no" today, especially after experiencing DST in the south. It feels like the sun is never going to go down! It's quite depressing seeing the sky still lit up at 9pm at night. Give me a good quick Qld sunset anyday.

Wind in the Willets
So, here you go.
The original person who came up with the idea of Daylight Savings or Summer Time was William Willett in July 1907. No he wasn't a Q'lder or a Western Austrlain, he was an Englishman, who live in Surrey. According to Wikipeadia, he; "...published a pamphlet "The Waste of Daylight". In it he proposed that the clocks should be advanced by 80 minutes in the summer. The evenings would then remain light for longer, increasing daylight recreation time and also saving ₤2.5 million in lighting costs. He suggested that the clocks should be advanced by 20 minutes at a time at 2 am on successive Sundays in April and be retarded by the same amount on Sundays in September." At least those who don't like DST, now have someone to directly complain about and blame !

Clearly, there is an aversion to Daylight Savings Time for IceinSpace bloggers. Interestingly, most of the Qlds and W.A.'ers aren't a bunch of happy campers!
I intend to make a further comment on the results, hopefully with a few more votes. Please

Looks like the WA'ers have rejected daylight savings time (yet again) in their current referendum.
According to the ABC on-line article "WA voters reject daylight savings", some 56% voted NO with 70% of the vote counted.
More interesting is the claim that the rejection was made on " environmental grounds", according to Andrew Waddell of the WA Labor Party. (whatever that actually means)
Does this auger that the rest of the country will follow suit?
OR
Are Queenslanders and Western Australians just different
to us Australian South-Easterners?
(Personally, i don't really understand the rejection, because to me allocation of time should be made for our connivence and no because it is somehow morally right or wrong.)

I am from the east spent most of my life there and was glad when daylight saving came around each year, been in WA 7 years with the last 3 trialing daylight saving and i can tell you when it is 35oC at 5pm in the afternoon you can't wait for the sun to go down and because of our timeline location we already have half hour extra sunlight in the summer so adding an hour makes for a very long and hot day.

I was a bit at odds with Daylight saving in Perth. My business wants Yes as I communicate with the US a bit and without daylight savings damn difficult.
Astronomy though different story, As it looks as though the No vote has won I expect I can get out earlier with the scope now in summer.

I dont mind Daylight savings. I tend to get home from work in daylight now, regardless of season, which has not always been the case.
Cheers Petra d.

WA needs daylight saving in winter
You are already getting up when it's dark anyhow
Save daylight when you need it not when you don't
Lets hope this is the last time a State Govt wastes taxpayers time on this issue

I live in Adelaide and don't think it makes sense. I can't get out scoping or imaging until 10pm at night, and having worked through the heat of the day, I am generally quite tired by then. It is a pain to manage the kids, who need routine and regulated sleeping patterns to stimulate good growth and be bright and aware for education. There is also the aforementioned noise restrictions on gardening/mowing, let alone watering restrictions. Not everyone loves to go to the beach and sailing and things like that in summer to enjoy the benefit of the time change. I won't go on, there is more against it than you think.
