David Malin Awards - on tour

G'day all,

Yesterday I stopped in at the Gin Gin Cosmos Centre/Gravit Discovery Centre to check out the photo's from the David Malin Awards which are on show there at the moment. What a great collection of images! Really stunning. It felt a bit like a "who's who" of Ice In Space! Several names I reconised!

It's really great that us over in the west have this opportunity to see the photo's in real life, quite different to seeing them on the web. Only a relatively small collection (30 odd?) but definitely a worthwhile trip to see them.

I'm not sure if I'm more or less inspired to enter after seeing them, such a high quality of image I don't think I can compete, but yet so inspiring to do more astro photography.

Roger.

Btw, if your in WA and didn't know about it, it's only on show until the 18th (has been for some time I think, but I didn't know about it until recently.)

Roger,

Is there a list online somewhere of whose images are being displayed?

I entered a few images, but, obviously didn't win anything. I was just wondering if they still get displayed, though? Would be a nice thought to know your work is being viewed around the country!

Regards,
Humayun

Would love to have a look, but there's no way I'm driving to Gin Gin!
Why is it so far away, why not in the city, at the Art Gallery or at one of the Uni's or something?

The Gravity Discovery Centre/Cosmos Centre is very well suited to it, and the location, inside their large (5 story??) gallery dome is quite unique. It's a much more interesting and "matching" location than say a univeristy foya, I think.

Gin Gin is a bit up north, it took us about an hour from where we live in the hills I think. The centre has a few other attractions which means it's not hard to spend 1.5 hours there, you can have lunch there too.

The other location I'd like to see this kind of thing held at would be the Perth Observatory. I think in that case and the Gin Gin case the location is inspiring to visitors also, it add to the exhibition.

At the gallery at Gin Gin they currently have a exhibition of John Goldsmith's work also, as well as the permanent displays. I like John's work but felt the exhibition of that could have been more. Nether the less it's something else to view there.

Btw, in case you're not familiar with the GDC: http://www.gdc.asn.au/

Simon,
I was trying to get the exhibition out to Campbelltown (NSW) to be shown at our new Art gallery.
Our society has a geographical footprint that covers a very large area.
We are also a very active society with good links with our local media.
Yet I was told (by one of the organisers) that Sydney Observatory in NSW is sufficent or travel to Canberra!!
Yet it's shown in Gin Gin, a very nice place but not exactly a hub of astronomical events.
My 2 cents.
