lunch at the park with my new Macro lense

I took my new Canon 100mm F2.8mm macro over to the Roma St Parklands in Brisbane's CBD for some lunch-time photography... here's a few pics. I'm particularly fond of vivid coloured petals with raindrops

An excellent series for just a lunchtime! Must have been no wind that day as everything's pretty sharp. Are these all hand-held? If so, great work!

Nice work Robert, especially for hand held. It was quite overcast today, so did you use any fill in flash? The rain drops on the purple flower suggest not as I cannot see a reflection from on-camera flash.

Cheers

Thanks Dennis, it was mixed over-cast but with bits of sun here and there so no fill flash used for these... I did use flash for a couple taken under the arbour, but wasn't very happy with those. At the moment I prefer to muck about with aperture first, then ISO to deal with light before I turn to flash, but with experience I'll probbaly make more use of it and it's clearly desirable in some cases.

cheers,

Rob

Colours are great!

Wow Alex, you have some sharp eyes in your head (great for Astro)... I took the pic and still didn't notice... I just went back and checked and yep, some-one's taken a bite out of this 7 legged beauty. I wonder do they grow back?

These pictures seem to suggest that the world must look beautiful to ants. Very nice - some of my favorites I've seen on this site!

I thought the Bee in the 4th image was incredibly sharp.
You had a very productive lunch break.

Nice shooting there Robert.
Composition is good and colours are nice and vivid.

You've done v.well for handheld but use a mono-pod next time, it makes a huge difference.

Thanks Andrew, I bought a heavy duty monpod from the states, but I've been bitterly dissapointed with it. Maybe I'm not using it right, but I find I can't really hold noticeably steadier with it and it really get's in the way with composing my shots and reduces my flexibility of movement without much if any gain.

I took a cheap light-weight aluminium tripod with me today and a camera bean bag and found thesevastly superior.

cheers,

Rob

The mono takes a bit of getting use to, but a tripod or bean bag is fantastic too, far better than handheld for macro shooting.
