observational target reference list

Evening all
Does anyone know of, or can anyone recommend an illustrated reference list of observational targets in the Southern skies. I am after something that would for instance have a page containing an illustration of the object, its location and magnitude etc. broken up into types eg. gallaxies, clusters. That i could then use as a cover sheet and add note taking pages behind. Sort of like an observation workbook.
Does such a thing exist or would i be better off building up a folder of my own?
cheers
Mick

Cambridge Star Atlas is quite good. I have the book anthony mentioned above as well.

You could also develop your own ob. workbook by making photocopies of the books pages and adding to your folder.

If you're interested in an online database, This site is quite good, it gives a list with charts and can be sorted as desired.
