New scope

After having a look around on the net, including the 2 reviews here, I bought a 10" Guang Sheng Dobsonian. (upgrading from a 8" Starspanner Dobsonian) Arrived yesterday, very excited, but having fun and games putting it together, as instructions very limited. Had panels facing wrong ways, and had to undo them all, lot trouble putting screws in, until I worked out I was using the Allen key the wrong way around, have also mangled the screws on the handles .... and screws and washers left over! Have spent MANY hours on it but think OK now. For those with limited assembly talents, www.zhumell.com/manuals/Dobsonian_manual.pdf - found this site this am, and has helped me finish off, as scope virtually the same, and good instructions. Looking forward to using it tonight, and skies clear.

Good luck with the scope. I wish I had soem clear skies tonight also but it doesn't look too hopeful.

Hi Liz
It's a shame you had problems but glad you worked it out!
The 10" dob is a great scope, you'll love it.

thank you all. Alas, didnt have too much luck last night, despite clear skies. Have obviously assembled base wrong as wont turn, hopefully just a case of a too tight bolt?? Took half hour to get Jupiter, as having to physically lift scope when turning .... rrrgh .... focuser unusual too, ages to focus anything .... but sure I will get used to it. We have out Townsville Astronomy Club meeting on tonight, so help there if needed.

Hi Liz, the base bolt that came with my 10" GSO dob was slightly too short so I replaced it with another bolt and two nuts, one nut acting as a lock nut. With the GSO bolt you have to tighten it far enough so that the nyloc nut is not going to work loose - if its too tight at that point, replace it.
