Glow-in-the-dark millipedes discovered in Australia for the first time

15 Dec 2022

Scott Kemp and amateur astronomer David Finlay have discovered millipedes in the Illawarra region of Australia that naturally glow in the dark.

Millipedes in Australia are known to fluoresce under UV light, but bioluminescence has never been recorded in native millipedes before.

The discovery has been flagged as a potentially undocumented, native species. "I didn't really think that I could discover anything new," said Kemp.

The exact location of the millipedes is being kept secret to protect the potentially native species.
