Jupiter 30th Sept 2022

Hey All,

I tend not to post up much of my images here, but after some help/advice from Averton (P&C) I should at least show my results.

Jupiter on Friday the 30th at 11:10 - 11:25pm with ok seeing conditions.

90sec videos captured in FireCapture, stacked in AutoStakkert, wavelets in RegiStax, WinJUPOS & wavelets in RegiStax.

An avg od 31% of 7 video capture was used

Celestron C8" (fl 4100mm, f/20)
ASI462MC
ZWO UV/IR Cut filter
ZWO ADC
ES 2x focal extender
BinTel SCT crayford focuser
Sky-Watcher NEQ6 Pro

I also have an amination here

Good images with some nice detail Wayne. The animation has come up really well. With the images, our preference would be for the second one with what looks like less sharpening. It always feels like a bit more sharpening is bringing out more detail, but often less is best.

I totally agree with the heavy handeling on the Sharpening. This part is a fine line between just enough and getting carried away.. which I have done

The main thing is my setup is now bang on and I just need to hone in on my post work.

I found using very good to excellent seeing samples of video captures helped me level up post processing.

I used Bill Koestring's Jupiter capture he posted on 9th Sept over on the FB group for "Planetary Imaging, Processing, and stacking Forum" helpful. A search on CN and even right here in IIS will reveal other examples to download and have a go with.

The attached screenshots are my processing settings applied to Bill's sample. It demonstrates on very good captures, only subtle changes are required. If I find I'm pushing the numbers and the rig was bang on, it typically means the seeing wasn't great. Then I have to dial back the sharpening to find that balance, as you guys mentioned.

Thanks for that info. Of course you cant beat good source data to begin with. I took some sequence on the 13th of Sept and they were rubbish compared to what I got on the 30th.

Saying that, I did watch an episode on youtube - TAIC where a respected planetary imager went into detail to never use the same wavelet settings (saved Template) for every time you shot that target. You might use it to start with, but each night or each focus change can result in using different wavelet settings.

We would agree with the planetary imager. The wavelet settings do need to be changed from one time to the next. What worked last time doesn't necessarily go that well next time, but as mentioned, it can provide a starting point.

Cheers P&C

Can someone help me out here.

As we know with a SCT when you adjust focus the primary mirror is moving which results in a small change in focal length. I notice in my FC logs that 1 batch of data would be at FL4000, another at FL4150 and also FL4100.

When de-rotating a stack of images in WinJUPOS, does the stack of images need to be the same focal lengths and sequence?

The change in focal length is only going to be very slight as a percentage. We're just not sure how FC knows what your focal length is & particularly how it could know it has changed due to focus. We can't help you with WinJupos at the moment as our WinJupos is "broken" at the moment. All of our computers run Linux so WinJupos has to run under WINE and since the last upgrade, it has stopped working. From memory though, it would seem reasonable that the magnification of the planet has to be the same as you don't apply the measurement tool to every video.

I too am trying to work out how FC knows the focal length. My gut tells me to keep them all at the some FL.... I'll play it safe.

"you don't apply the measurement tool to every video" Do you stack your video's directly in WinJUPOS?

No, we stack our videos in AS!3. All we have ever done with WinJupos is de-rotate stacked images. We know some people who de-rotate their whole videos but we've gone into it.

Great pic and and interesting discussion too. Me and Winjupos don’t get along that well either, but I’ve heard it said that you only benefit to derotate the whole video if in alt-az. Otherwise derotating the image will work. Id be extremely surprised if a change in focus would produce any measurable change in focal length. But changing backspacing and then the subsequent refocus would definitely do it.

Now you have sparked my interest. I have an evolution alt-az mount I wanted to use for planetary imaging so I can free up my EQ6 for DSO with my ED120 on the same night. I didnt use the evo mount as I thought that WinDUPOS needed a GEM mount and only de-rotates from East to West.

I would also like to know how to process a raw video directly in WinDUPOS.
