I went scuba diving just off there (there is a healthy reef system). And while it didn't do anything like that when I was there, it did send up clouds of ash every few minutes, sometimes accompanied with huge pyroclastic boulders lofted into the sky. You could hear the rumbling of the eruptions transmitted through the water when you were under.

It was an amazing experience. Still, I wished I'd seen something like that. Seeing real lava is one of my bucketlist items.

Hmmm. Not sure I’d say “magnificent”...

The accounts of the lead up an explosion in 1883 make a great read particularly the graphic account of Captain Lindeman https://blogs.scientificamerican.com...1883-krakatoa/ I wouldn’t want to be within 50km of it, anytime.

Which reminds me of what happened in the earthquake recently - the stupid tourists rush to the waters edge hoping to see a tsunami. Those who understand what will follow get on their motorbikes and head inland as fast as possible.

Same happened in Hawaii many decades ago. Tourists were all staring at the exposed bottom of the bay where previously there had been 2-3 metres of water. The locals were fleeing... what followed wasn’t “magnificent”.

What causes the lightning?

The lightning is the discharge from the charge process that develops as the ash cloud moves through the atmosphere.

When i was young and foolish. Similar to Markus’ experience above, it was periodically throwing out house-sized boulders when i decdied to go for a walk on it.

Yagon - you're braver than me.

I wonder when it spits out lava instead of ash? Or if it's just a matter of shooting it at night as in the footage above?
