Boring old Eta Carinae

Thought i would choose an easy target to get my skills back up its been a while.
First image with my atik 11000 and complete new optical train PDF Focuser/MMOAG/ Atik filter wheel 2' filters.
Took some time to get spacing right.
Only 1.75 hours data such a bright target so easy to work with.

There are 2 column defects in there that im still working out best method for processing out i probably should have dithered a little.

Quite a nice result Michael, viewing the standard size on AstroBin it looks pretty good, some processing artefacts, wonky stars and column defects are really only noticeable when viewing at full size. The resolution around the keyhole is pretty good

Yes dithering more may help I guess..? Or in Astroart6, that I use, there is a column remover available in preprocessing, you just identify the column and it will be removed in every sub as part of calibration.

Nothing boring about it Michael. Sharp focus and plenty of colour and detail. Well done.

Take out your column defects with deep sky stacker it is in stacking settings
That is what I do with class 2 chip.

When I tried it before, the link to Astrobin yielded an Ice In Space "Something terrible happened" error, but now it is working.

The image looks very good.

We do both those things. Firstly, GoodLook 64's "Portobello" calibration module identifies bad columns in the darks, where they are most obvious and easiest to find statistically, and then replaces those bad columns with the mean of their neighbours. Works pretty well. (We don't have any actually totally dead columns, but we have about 35 of them out of 4000 that are a bit dodgy). Then, assuming we have at least three (and preferably more) dithered subs, "Prometheus", the registration module, produces a "winsorized" sample at each registered pixel, replacing all outliers with the most extreme value that would not count as an outlier. That is mainly to get rid of cosmic rays, hot pixels, satellite trails, and ghost afterimages, but it would also get rid of bad columns even if we hadn't already handled them. As strongmanmike said, standard packages will do something similar to both these steps. The two approaches make very different assumptions and are complementary.

Hi Michael,
I agree with Mike,
the full size does show a few problems but it's overall a very nice picture.
I never tire of Eta Carinae -
it's my favourite target.

There is a lot going on in there as per this annotated image:

cheers

Thanks for honest critique Mike . Some wonky stars i guess can be attributed to my poor guiding.I have been having problems getting round stars through my MMOAG and onto my guide chip. I have added a spacer and will need to do some tinkering to get light orthogonal.

Processing artifacts i could tidy up with some flats/bias/darks i hope. i was being lazy and didn't do any.

Ive downloaded the demo astroart and ill be giving it ago see how it handles those pesky columns.

I know not fair to call it boring we are lucky to have such a huge bright target in our southern sky's i hope those northerners get jealous.
I was very happy with the colour it was pretty much un processed just a little brightening and vibrancy added.
