Choppers and noise polution
I know I am a cranky old git but I recon it is a bit of hide that choppers can fly over your suburbs making more noise than the kid with a straight thru exhaust on his hot rod. No problems with the police if they are looking for acres of dope but I guess thats not a problem is Sydney, but I recon these are just traffic observers do we need them? and why cant they get their act together and make less noise. I dont have a sound reader whatchamacallit but I dont need an instrument to know they exceed limits set for other folk. How do you feel about this ..or my crankiness whatever.

The amount of noise depends on what suburb you are in, sounds like you are under one of the Flight Lanes or near a Training Area. Most helicopter operations in and around Sydney fly at about 1000 feet unless they are within the Bankstown Control Zone, they do drop lower when they are flying along the the Lanes through Sydney Harbour and along the coast (500 ft from memory), also inbound from the west they drop height in steps on approach to Bankstown. Police and Medical Retrevial do have permission to fly lower when on operations but they mainly fly at the normal Class G heights.
Operations are controlled by the Sydney Basin Visual Pilot Guide (VPG) see:
http://www.casa.gov.au/pilots/downlo...NEY/sydney.pdf
for further info.
Noise also is dependant on the type of Aircraft as well, more modern AS-350, Long Rangers, Kawasaki, Bell 410, SkyCrane, have a very pronounced thump in certain flight conditions due to their blade design, others have a high pitched whine from the tail rotors.
Some things may have changed since I was in Helicopter Operations out of Bankstown a few years ago now.
Cheers

As I work at the main hospital in Canberra we get the careflights coming in quite often about 200 metres from my window, I have gotten used to them now.

I am in Cheltenham which is very quiet as there are no units, commercial or shops which is unique in Sydney I think and as there is no traffic noise I suppose the noise is more noticble .
Thanks for the link JohnG and thanks everyone ..I am a little like a lady in my approach... you dont need to solve my problems I just need someone to listen and feel they understand .

Looks like you are either in or near the Inbound and Outbbound Lanes - North.
Last time I flew into Tabulam the tail rotor was attacked by an eagle, took a dislike to the noise, could have been a bit dangerous, lol, funny thing was, when we landed some of the locals disappeared rather quickly was rather amusing to watch, must have had something to hide
Cheers

we get some very loud aircraft (not just choppers) at times, but they are infrequent so they dont bother me.

I have a feeling about what you mean Alex, though for me it's not the noise. I live about 1 Km from the Nambour hospital, and I know that these people are doing important jobs transporting seriously injured people and I praise their wonderful work. But why, why, when the hospital has a blazing red light that can be seen for kms in every direction, on the top of their roof and the whole building is lit up like a xmas tree, do they still need to shine their 2 billion candle spotlight in my back yard when I'm imaging

Maybe you should rub out the big 'H' you drew on the ground marking out your future observatory site Paul.

I can see I have confused some.
I am in Sydney at the moment in the suburb of Cheltenham..one stop past Epping. That is where the choppers bother me. Tabulam is where the choppers bother the hippies who have the pot and Tabulam is where I live most of the time. The choppers dont bother me up there (Tabulam) the only time I see them up there is when it floods and the bridges go under and I cant get out for provisions..then the guys in the choppers feed me and other poor devils cut off by the flood water, as they fly in food.
Anyways whoever got them (the choppers in Sydney) to go away from here thanks.
And certainly up in Tabulam the jets fly over head on route South.
The demolision was neat but they had nearly finished so I said nothing about noise polution to the workers there.

When I saw the title of this thread I thought you meant Choppers as in Customised Harley's with aftermarket pipes
