Shortwave and Ham

Anybody here enjoy Shortwave and Ham listening......

I'm not talking about ' Transceivers " ..... only Receivers.

I use a Kenwood R5000 and a Kenwood R1000 ..... 50ft Long wire is used as an antenna with great results.

Hi Col. You my have been hearing me on air.. I love to listen at first, as well as the aviation band.. Then a friend of mine told me about how simplified the process had become to get a license to transmit. It's called a foundation license and allows for limited usage.. I decided to go for it, and to my supprise I passed... Then I learnt more with the support of my local radio club. Has been great fun and have met and spoken to many people. I have a group of about 6 friends that I talk to each day on my way to work in the car. I know lots about them (like pen pals). However I have never met any of them. I have upgraded to a higher level of license now and love talking to people all over the world via voice and digital transmissions.. It all started from doing what you do I'd a Dick Smiths Receiver...

Regards Martin

Martin ..... I could have listened to you, not sure.

I get a lot of ' traffic ' coming out of Melbourne, with call signs starting with VK3 .... also VK2 out of NSW.

Plenty of VK4 stuff up my way also....especially Bunderburg QLD.

A few weeks ago on a Saturday afternoon a SA Ham was ' booming ' in on the 40m Band.

Have picked up some overseas stuff from Oregon , Canada / Mexico / New Zealand and Tokyo.....

I listen to the International Pacific Air Routes on 8867Mhz talking to Nandi and San Fransisco ... giving out ' squawk codes '

Also the regular Aviation freq's ...118.100 / 123.900 / and others.

Col.....

I was a ship's Radio Officer for many years. I've often wondered if Ham radio might help to fill the void.
