Abstract: The aurora australis remain an elusive sight from Australia. But from Western Canada the identical aurora borealis often appear in the sky. Alan Dyer will present an inspiring gallery of still images, time-lapse movies, and real-time videos of the Northern Lights taken from his home province of Alberta, Canada, and from the edge of the Arctic in Churchill, Manitoba. Alan heads north every winter to the shores of Hudson Bay, to a latitude of 58 degrees north, to shoot the Lights from the prime zone where they dance overhead almost every clear night in spectacular displays.

BIO: Alan Dyer is one of Canada’s best-known astronomy authors and astrophotographers. He was recently inducted into the prestigious The World at Night group of photographers. He currently serves as associate editor of Canada’s SkyNews magazine, and as a contributing editor to Sky and Telescope. He has co-authored several best selling guidebooks for amateur astronomers, including The Backyard Astronomer’s Guide, and most recently the ebook How to Photograph and Process Nightscapes and Time-Lapses, available through the Apple iBooks Store. He recently retired from 40 years of producing programs for planetariums in Canada. As an amateur astronomer Alan takes the opportunity as often as possible to visit southern latitudes in pursuit of fabulous southern skies, thus his visit to Parkes and the Central West. His other obsession, eclipse chasing, has taken him to every continent, chalking up 15 total solar eclipses. Asteroid 78434 is named for him.
