Backburning has killed tonight's observing

Coming home 30 minutes ago I found Ryde is blanketed in smoke so thick it actually stung my eyes. The RFS website says there's lots of hazard reduction going on this weekend while conditions are favourable.

Obviously the work needs to be done but it's too thick to stay outside. Tonight the GRS is favourable at the same time as a double shadow transit. Bummer.

Tomorrow night is also the NSAS night at Terry Hills but this is right in the middle of the burn area so that might be stuffed as well.

I hate clear skies going to waste!

Morton I think I'll give it a shot, though I won't be taking a scope. The $64 question is whether the sea breeze will kick in - it did yesterday and lasted well into the evening.
At present here in Killara (1pm) its OK, not much smoke but fairly calm.

There are four fires this afternoon - Belrose, East Lindfield, Cherrybrook and Allambie (Manly reservoir).

About 30 minutes after posting last night a breeze had sprung up and the smoke was mostly gone. Ended up seeing the double transit after all.

Just started to smell today's smoke here in Ryde. Will see how it develops over the rest of the day.

Morton the sea breeze has indeed kicked in here (2pm) - a nice NE at 15 knots, which will keep the observing site clear till well into the evening.
