Telescope Advise

Hi guys,

I have a friend that needs a telescope. He lives in an apartment in the CBD by the harbour so views are pretty good. So he wants something that is good for terrestrial viewing as well (right side up images), in addition to looking at some planets (maybe even galaxies if possible?). Must be easy to use as well so GOTO will be good. Ideally he wants to keep it at around $1000.

He is able to get the following scopes for these prices

Celestron 4SE - $750
Celestron 5SE - $1000

Will these be suitable for him? Thanks very much for the advise.

Hi and welcome , my 5c is grab the 5inch , for the extra $250 its a much better all round scope .
All he needs is an image erecting diagonal to view terrestrially and the standard star diagonal that comes with the scope for night time viewing , yes the C5 is a great all round scope .

Hi Brian, thanks for the advise. Are you able to recommend an image erecting diagonal for him? Or are these things pretty standard? Will this be fine?

Hi Sin I bought a new Celestron nexstar slt 6 inch goto from binostore for about $649.00
It was an excellent scope and very easy to star align.
with the change you could invest in Sky Safari pro app and a WiFi module and control your scope with you tab or phone.
it's an excellent way to learn what everything is and the scope will slew to the target automatically.
With this app you can also learn about and look at photos of each target.

PS you can image with your camera Piggyback on these mounts and get some great results.

Hi Sin , both Andrews and Bintel sell generic 1 1/4 inch erecting diagonals , these are 45 degree ( not 90 degree like the supplied one )and really help in terrestrial viewing and not to expensive .
I like Willow's advise on the 6 inch and for $649 that cant be beat for a very good scope at an un-beatable price , very , very good these 6 inchers are with a world wide following as a great performer .

Again my 5c , good luck with what ever you choose and please keep us informed as to your choice .

I am new to this, and have been researchiing the Celestron Nexstar 6SE

where did this thread end up in terms of where best to buy it from?

there seems to be a few USA sites that cost about $1000 australian posted, which is substantially cheaper than any where in Aus that i can see

also...for a beginner...is this scope easy to set up e.t.c?? or does it take ages to do the alignment e.t.c??

i am mainly thinking of getting into looking at the stars e.t.c also for the kids to see whats going on up above them

finally..is the standard 6SE package enough? or are there other accessories that are a must buy for a beginner??

some sites package with other things, such as a case, but others come with the celestron eyepiece kit

all costs more i realise, the case at least looks like a must to protect it...for an extra $100USD

hi all, i have a 10 inch Collapsible Sky-Watcher fitted with a Argo navis computer and all so a Celestron nexstar 8 se.
Both Wonderful scopes.Both are easy to align.
