This is one of those moments where you can beat your head against the wall. Because of a Bunning’s development near my place they had to improve the intersection near me – well I nearly fell over last night when i got home. They installed 8 new lights!!!!!!!!! Not just any light either, it’s the bl00dy cobra head that spread everywhere and I have absolutely no way of getting anything done about it. AS 4282 does not apply to road lighting, advertising signs and lighting systems that are of a cyclic or flashing nature.
I am gutted – the observatory will be lit up DIRECTLY by these, the photos are from where the telescope would be exposed.
I have had 20 years of at least being able to have a northern and western sky – not now!!!
That's bloody terrible David.
They have just done the same thing to my NW skyline with a 24hour illuminated refuse tip and recycling centre. I am across the valley from them and it is bright enough to cast shadows on my walls. At night I watch from my obs and no one ever goes in there after dark so it was particularly pointless.
Bloody idiots.

Sorry to hear David,
Just a thought, the development would have required a council permit, and where there is a permit, the council is obliged to inform and consult nearby residents who may be affected. Did you get a letter from the council before all this started?
If not, maybe you can follow this up with the council to see if anything can be done about changing the lights or re-directing. I also recall that all new street lights needs to be LEDs instead the old 1 kw variety.
We had a resident complain about light shining into her bedroom causing her to lose sleep etc, and the council successfully had the offending light removed.
So maybe there is some hope

residential lighting is different to street road classifiacation lighting, and i work for the offending council, and the person in question who is looking after this development has now received my official complaint. I requested cutoffs be fitted to ALL the lights. Unfortunately because of the classification of the road they won’t remove them.
I feel for you. I live on the edge of a small country town, and it was good
for a while. Now I have street lights within about 40 metres in 3 of the 4
directions I look from my back yard.

Damn! Makes me so glad I'll moving to the back of beyond soon!
I had a similar (but not nearly as bad) situation when they converted an open allotment next to my current house into an urban park -- complete with a bunch of streetlights, one of which shines directly over my back fence. I need to use a large, heavy blanket, slung over my kid's trampoline net, in order to block it.

Wow, the tea-room conversation must be a bit strained.
