Mars

A small, fuzzy Mars. It's the best I could do at f/10 with focal length of 2500mm (no Barlow or Powermate, I'm afraid) and Mars was a bit low in the sky with fairly ordinary seeing.

Shot with a Canon 600d using HD video mode. Converted to RGB24 in VirtualDub and processed in RS6 (AutoStakkert spat the dummy, so I'm wondering if the result wouldn't have been better in AS!2) then Gimp.

It may be a bit fuzzy, but it's way better than anything I've
managed. I rarely see any detail other than the white pole
in my 10" Dob, but then my eyes are not what they were.

Repro: Re-stacked a few more frames and applied wavelet sharpening a bit more aggressively. It produced an orange glow but a tad more surface detail (I think).

Started again (same data set) with a top-down reprocess. Added a couple of more processing stages with a different approach which seems to pay off. It's still a small, fuzzy Mars, but now slightly less fuzzy.

I still think it's a great effort. Mars is so small & to get a result as good as this with amateur equipment. Well done.

Nice one Astro,

When you get to the stacked result, click on the RGB align button along the right side and make sure Mars is in the box. Click estimate and see if the values change for RGB.

It looks like it needs an align as there is red/blue fringing on opposite sides of the disc, give this a go and you should get sharper results.

Syrtis Major is visible, so you have done well!

Good tip! I hadn't noticed that one (or had dismissed it as being for something else). It did remove the top/bottom colour fringes, but unfortunately, with data this poor, it also introduced new fringing inside the lower limb and at the (southern?) ice cap (top right).

Always open to advice.
